The Importance of Literacy
Chapter 1
Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen, however why is it important? Literacy is important because it’s a skill people use everyday in
their lives. The ability to read, write, speak and listen allows people to understand information, and communicate in everyday life, share ideas, and solve problems.
Without literacy, people may face difficulties understanding conversations, which can limit their participation in school, and jobs.
Literacy also plays a big part in education for students. Strong reading and writing skills help students understand lessons across different subjects like english,
maths, and history. In addition, literacy is also important for the development of society. According to UNESCO, Literacy strengthens people. Other than its importance
for student education, literacy also improves lives by expanding capabilities which in turn reduces poverty, and has positive effects on health and sustainable development.
According to the World Bank, a benefit of literacy is income from work. Workers with more education earn higher salaries than others with no post-secondary education.
Literacy supports personal development, making it easier for people to pursue higher education and succeed in future careers.
